Gwent Boys Matchplay Championship
which was played at Greenmeadow Golf Club on Monday/Tuesday 28th/29th
While the course was quite wet in places after the torrential rain on
Saturday the greens were in excellent condition and a tribute to the Green
Oliver Moss came into the draw as a late replacement being the next highest placed qualifier. He won his first match against Piers Murphy by 3 & 2 on Monday morning and birdied the last against tournament favourite Dan Bearcroft to win by 2 Holes.
The Final on Tuesday morning between Oliver Moss and Logan Westley was a very close affair, with Logan going 2 Up at one stage only for Oliver to
claw his way back into the match. The match was all square after 16 holes
only for Logan to 3 Putt the 17th to give Oliver a one hole lead. Logan just
shaved the hole on 18 for his birdie but Oliver made his birdie on the last
to win the Championship by 2 Holes.

The Gwent Wessex League team ended their season with a fine victory over Wessex League leaders Gloucestershire by 7½ points to 4½ at Woodlake Park on Sunday 20th October 2019.
Gwent under new Captain Matthew Morgan took the morning foursomes by 3 points to 1 and continued to show some excellent results in the afternoon singles taking the series by 4½ points to 3½ and the match overall by 7½ points to 4½.
This fine win will give the Gwent Wessex League team a great lift going into next season.
Gwents win denied Gloucestershire the Wessex League title and allowed Glamorgan to take the title by half match point.
Gwents selection for their final U16 Channel League match against Wiltshire U16 was severely disrupted by the withdrawal of 3 of their top players, one through sickness and two through injury which meant that Gwent could only field a team of 9 players.
This meant that Gwent were 2 points down before the match started. Gwent lost the morning foursomes by 5 points to nil. The afternoon singles started well with wins for Oliver Moss and Will Fido. Harrison Guy and Lewis Woods also won their games to give Gwent their only 4 points in the match.
Projecting the U18 and U16 squads for the 2020 season there will be some big changes for both U18 and U16.
The U18 will be losing 6 players at the end of this year: Dan Bearcroft, Finnigan Davies, Joseph Hill, Logan Westley, Cameron Powell, and Dafydd Rowberry.
The U16’s will be losing 5 players at the end of this year: Oliver Moss, Piers Murphy, Harry Paterson, Joshua Chamberlain, and Joe Cawthorn.
While these players will help reinforce the U18 team there is no U16 players coming through to replace them leaving the 2020 U16 team with a core of only 7 players.
Some of these 7 players will be required to play for the U18 team.
While clubs may have U16 juniors who would satisfy the age criteria they fail to meet the handicap requirements of 12 or better to compete at county level.
Taking these factors into account it is likely that Gwent will be withdrawing from the Under 16 Channel League in 2020.
Gwents first team had a disappointing end to their 2019 season losing by 11½ point to 3½ against Gloucestershire at Cotswold Hills on Sunday 13th October 2019.
Having lost the morning foursomes by 4 games to 1 Gwent left themselves a difficult task to recover the situation in the afternoon singles.
As with Devon the previous week, Gwents top order struggled against a strong Gloucestershire team and lost the first 6 singles games which saw Gloucestershire win the Channel League for the second consecutive year.
Gwent v Devon Channel League match which was played at Newport on Sunday 6th October 2019.
Gwent were fielding one of their strongest teams of the season and took the morning foursomes by 3½ points to 1½ with hopes of better things to come in the afternoon singles.
Devon had other ideas and won the first four afternoon singles games to wipe out their deficit from the morning. Gwent managed to steady the ship after this setback and won some very close games to only lose the singles by 6 games to 4 and halving the match 7½ points apiece.
Gwent Seniors have now completed their 2019 season with their rearranged singles games from their abandoned match against Wiltshire at Salisbury & South Wilts being finally completed at Kingsdown Golf Club on Friday 27th September.
Gwent Seniors lost the Foursomes by 3½ points to 1½ at Salisbury & South Wilts and needed to win the singles at Kingsdown by at least 8 points to 2 to overall leaders Cornwall who were ahead with 51 game points for.
Unfortunately Gwent only managed to half with 5 points apiece and losing the match by 8½ points to 6½ and find themselves languishing in 5th place in the end of season Seniors Channel League.
Gwent Seniors suffered a setback in their quest to win the Seniors Channel League having been defeated by Gloucestershire by 8 points to 7 at Brickhampton Court on Tuesday 24th September. It is still mathematically possible if Gwent Seniors can defeat Wiltshire Seniors in their rearranged singles match by the margin of 8 points to 2 on Friday 27th September.
Gwent Junior Inter Club Team Championship which was played at Pontypool Golf Club.
